ACEM - European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers – ACEM reported recently that as of the 1st January 2020, (just past) all new type-approved motorcycles and mopeds sold in the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) will have to meet a new Euro 5 environmental standard, this will replace the current Euro 4 specification. ACEM say that this brings the pollutant emissions of L-category vehicles (i.e. mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles) to the same level as Euro 6 cars. Further stating that, “Technical innovation in the motorcycle … [Read more...]

London Emissions Flawed Modelling
Transport for London (TfL) has repeatedly claimed that individual motorcycles can be highly polluting and has used this logic in part to charge pre Euro 3 (i.e. pre 2007) motorcycles £12.50 a day, which don't measure up to emission standards in the newly introduced Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in central London. The Motorcycle Action group - MAG - has however challenged this view and has provided sound evidence that this "logic" is flawed. Ditching its usual rhetoric MAG has come out of its corner, demanding that TfL produce evidence to back this claim that pre Euro … [Read more...]
Mutual Concession London Emissions
London – Since we published the details contained in the results of the - Who Rides London? – survey we haven’t published many updates on the plans from Transport for London (Tfl) to introduce a ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) in the city where certain motorcycles (Powered Two Wheelers – PTWs) are to be charged £12.50 per day, the same as all other vehicles that do not meet the emissions target set by TfL. The survey was a study to identify specific issues relating to PTWs which fall within the Euro 3 emission standards (PTWs manufactured from 2007 onwards) or … [Read more...]
Emissions Targets – Really A Sound Issue
Europe - ACEM the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) has published a position paper on requirements to apply amendments to a European Regulation. The regulation is the Approval and market surveillance of two- or three-wheel vehicles and quadricycles regulations which we dealt with previously as Right To Ride EU . It was implemented in 2013 and referred to the type-approval of new motorcycles. Since then the European Commission (mainly through a stakeholder working group, Motor Cycle Working Group (MCWG), comprised of the motorcycle industry rider … [Read more...]
Hanoi Plans to Control Motorcycle Emissions
Hanoï – Vietnam - According to the “latest” news hitting the internet news stands, Hanoi’s city council approved a decision to “banish" Powered Two Wheelers (PTWs – Mopeds – Scooters – Motorcycles) from the downtown city streets of Vietnam’s capital Hanoi by 2030. Officials are quoted as saying that in a city of over five million motorbikes, with a population of over seven million people, a population density of 2300 persons per square kilometre and that is expected to rise to nine 9 million by the year 2030, the “ban” is required to free the heavily congested roads and … [Read more...]
Norway And Taxing Emissions
Norway – The Norwegian Motorcycle Union (NMCU) - formed in 1972 and the sole organisation looking after the interests of Norwegian road-riding motorcyclists – reports that its government has added to the CO2 (Carbon dioxide) emissions fee which will lead to a dramatic increase in tax on some new models from motorcycle manufacturers. The Norwegian government’s new budget sees the government introduce a CO2 component in the calculation of a one-time emissions fee (purchase/import/registration tax) from 1st July 2017 for motorcycles in line with the system for cars. This … [Read more...]
Emissions – Let – Hindrance or Charge
France - Overall there doesn’t seem to be much happening in our corner of the motorcycling world. That is apart from today’s national demonstration – 1st October 2016 – organised by the French riders group FFMC - Fédération des Motards en Colère (1) regarding emission free zones (circulation restreinte) and the “banning” and fining of motorcycles and other vehicles that do not meet emission standards. In Paris where this has already been introduced, these vehicles are banned between the hours of 8am and 8pm during weekdays – pre-1997 vehicles and motorbikes before 1st … [Read more...]
