In February 2024 we published an article about motorcycle theft, this was then republished in May this year entitled “Motorcycle Theft and Jolly Good Company“
In the last few months there has been a flurry of campaigns and articles by organisations involved in motorcycle lobbying.
Our article covered the issues like legislation and why part of the problem was the lack of adequate security in the manufacture of motorcycles/scooters/mopeds.
It also explained the reasons for theft, amongst which a major issue being theft for spare parts.
We all know that motorcycle parts are very expensive, especially OEM parts (original manufacturer parts).
Yet none of the lobbying organisations are prepared to challenge the industry to lower their prices as an attempt or even a gesture to discourage thieves from making money out of spare parts. When the lobbying organisations decide to work hand in hand with industry, it compromises their autonomy.
Then there are the “Clubs” like the Motorcycle Crime Reduction Group which are no more than talk shops where the boys (police, manufacturers, insurance companies, security companies, lobby groups etc) all sit round a table, talk a lot, have a cup of tea and biscuits then do nothing until the next meeting.
Ultimately insurers and motorcycle manufacturers don’t care – The Fear Industry – December 2006 – pdf – 1.27mb. If anything it gives the insurers the opportunity to increase your premiums and scare you into paying higher rates with the premise that your bike is at risk.
Also to consider that having your bike stolen can give the manufacturers the opportunity to sell more of them.
The best you can get from the police is to be told that bike has been shipped to Eastern Europe rather than ending up in an auction house or in a scrap yard to be sold on in pieces.
So how about it MCIA (UK – Motorcycle Industry Association)/ACEM ( The Motorcycle Industry In Europe) how about you get the manufacturers to drop the prices of OEM spare parts?
You never know, it might just make a difference.
