Where do you go My Lovely?

23rd February 2022 by Motorcycleminds Leave a Comment

Where do you go My Lovely ? (when you're sold on for scrap) Did you know that in the UK (according to DVLA statistics) there were 11518  L3* motorcycles written off by insurance companies in 2021? Just to explain - there are four categories of written off vehicles in the UK. A category write offs must be completely scrapped i.e. all parts destroyed (there were 145 L3 motorcycles); B category write offs can only be used for spare parts (there were 3071 L3 motorcycles); N category (once known as D cat.)  refers to cosmetic damage and can be repaired and put back on the … [Read more...]

Myth and Reality – Subculture

30th January 2022 by Motorcycleminds Leave a Comment

‘Myth and Reality in the Motorcycle Subculture' Elaine Hardy PhD - Motorcycle Minds I wrote a PhD thesis entitled "Fear of Crime and Vested Interests - a Case Study of Motorcyclists". During my PhD research I came across Maz Harris' thesis '‘Myth and Reality in the Motorcycle Subculture' (he worked on his PhD in the same department at Warwick Univ. as me). Sadly he died in May 2000 as a result of a motorcycle crash. Anyway, I took copious notes and from those, I looked at a couple of interesting issues in his thesis: He compares the motorcycle outlaw subculture … [Read more...]

WHO Would Have Thought

27th January 2022 by Motorcycleminds Leave a Comment

WHO Would Have Thought - motorcyclists are not vulnerable road users. On October 6th 2020, the IfZ conference was held online. Normally this conference is held every two years in Cologne (Germany) together with the INTERMOT motorcycle show. After the prelude and introduction, the conference commenced with a "Round Table" moderated by Antonio Perlot, General Secretary of ACEM. The participants included industry and rider organisation representatives. However the real star of the show was Nhan Tran from the World Health Organisation (WHO). He was absolutely brilliant in … [Read more...]

Clutter of Road Safety Reports

26th November 2021 by Motorcycleminds Leave a Comment

As motorcyclists, we are regularly blighted with the opinions of "Road Safety Experts". In general these "experts" are from academia, civil service, government agencies and so forth. Overwhelmingly, only a small minority have ever had the joy of actually riding a motorcycle. YET! they have opinions about motorcycle safety. The latest document to join this long list of badly researched, short on evidence and lacking in knowledge, is from the World Bank. At Motorcycle Minds, we are privileged in that we are not obliged or beholden to anybody. Thus our opinions are … [Read more...]

Win This Global Race

1st April 2020 by Motorcycleminds Leave a Comment

FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) - We have to win this global race together - The FIM says that it has an important role to play during Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in terms of educating and informing riders around the world how to behave in a correct and responsible manner. Exactly what we have been saying that although riders should follow their government advance, which may or may not include enforceable social self isolation, riding a motorcycle is not social isolation, it is not physical exercise as interpreted. To emphasize what we have … [Read more...]

DROPPING THE PRICE?

In February 2024 we published an article about motorcycle theft, this was then republished in May this year entitled "Motorcycle Theft and Jolly Good Company"

In the last few months there has been a flurry of campaigns and articles by organisations involved in motorcycle lobbying.
Our article covered the issues like legislation and why part of the problem was the lack of adequate security in the manufacture of motorcycles/scooters/mopeds.

It also explained the reasons for theft, amongst which a major issue being theft for spare parts. We all know that motorcycle parts are very expensive, especially OEM parts (original manufacturer parts). Yet none of the lobbying organisations are prepared to challenge the industry to lower their prices as an attempt or even a gesture to discourage thieves from making money out of spare parts. When the lobbying organisations decide to work hand in hand with industry, it compromises their autonomy.

Then there are the "Clubs" like the Motorcycle Crime Reduction Group which are no more than talk shops where the boys (police, manufacturers, insurance companies, security companies, lobby groups etc) all sit round a table, talk a lot, have a cup of tea and biscuits then do nothing until the next meeting.

Ultimately insurers and motorcycle manufacturers don't care. If anything it gives the insurers the opportunity to increase your premiums and scare you into paying higher rates with the premise that your bike is at risk. investigativeresearch.org/documents/The%20Fear%20Industry.pdf

Also to consider that having your bike stolen can give the manufacturers the opportunity to sell more of them. The best you can get from the police is to be told that bike has been shipped to Eastern Europe rather than ending up in an auction house or in a scrap yard to be sold on in pieces.

So how about it MCIA/ACEM - how about you get the manufacturers to drop the prices of OEM spare parts? You never know, it might just make a difference.
