We have followed the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) Annual Road Safety Awards ever since we brought a version of an original road safety programme to Northern Ireland in our previous life as Right To Ride. That award was for the Ambulance Motorcycle Club of the UK CRASH Card www.crashcard.co.uk which is now available in several European countries and the United States. This received the FIM Road Safety Award in 2012. This year, marking the seventh year of the FIM Roa Safety award, was originally instituted as part of the FIM’s contribution to the … [Read more...]
The Stupid Factor
We Are Human - Over the last ten years I have been involved in road safety research. In the last 5 years I have had the fortune of working with professional road collision investigators who kindly gave me access to their case files of road traffic fatalities in Northern Ireland. Overall, I studied around 150 fatalities, broken down into three groups: Motorcyclists, Pedestrians and Vehicle Occupants (the latter referring mainly to car drivers and passengers). What interested me was the way that in each case it was not a specific issue that caused the death of the "victim" … [Read more...]
Crashing with ABS – Survey Time!
European/Global - ABS - Anti Lock Brakes – Advanced Braking Systems, whatever you wish to label them, are certainly marked out in the realms of ongoing motorcycling technical innovations as something that improves rider safety. Any challenges about the ability of ABS not to stop in corners, on loose road surfaces while keeping the rider upright, has faded away as practical and “paper” research debunks any dissent, putting forward evidence that ABS saves riders lives. As ABS moves technically forward, linked to more advanced electronics and other handling systems, some … [Read more...]
ABS For Motorcycles – Do They Matter?
Advanced Braking Systems (ABS) For Motorcycles - Do They Matter? - In 2015, we (that's Trevor and myself as Right To Ride) wrote an article about mandatory braking systems which were to be introduced from 2016 – i.e. new motorcycles of more than 125 cc equipped with an enhanced ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), whereas the incorporation of anti-lock or combined brake systems for motorcycles under 125 cc would be left to the choice of the vehicle manufacturer (for the time being anyway). In 2011 the European Commission and Parliament argued that ABS would reduce casualties by … [Read more...]
Tesla “autopilot” Properly Tested With Motorcycles?
Norway - The Norwegian Motorcyclists’ Union (NMCU) has contacted Elon Musk, founder of Tesla Motors and asked him: Is Tesla "autopilot" properly tested with motorcycles? This is as a follow-up letter to the Minister of Transport, where NMCU took up the issue of people being fooled into believing that adaptive cruise control makes the vehicle "self-executing". NMCU insists that any system being basis for the term "self-driving" must be thoroughly tested with motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians before being put on the market. They have also requested to Tesla Motors: … [Read more...]
No Surprise – No Accident
United Kingdom – “All accidents are the result of prediction failure. Surprise is Nature’s way of telling us we have experienced such a failure. If there is no surprise, there can be no accident” The aim of the ‘No Surprise? No Accident!’ campaign is to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes by shifting the way we think about road safety. No Surprise? No Accident! argues that we need new and original thinking to tackle old problems, a new paradigm for motorcycle safety. Take the time to read through the article below. At times it may seem a bit heavy going but to … [Read more...]
Motorcycle safety and accidents in Europe
Europe - The Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA) - made up of rider organisations who represent their members in countries from across Europe report that, "Motorcycle safety and accidents vary between individual countries." FEMA has come to this conclusion in a summary report - "Motorcycle Safety and Accidents in Europe - pdf 569kb" which analyses surveys conducted between 2011 and 2014 of around 25,000 motorcyclists (m/f) about motorcycle safety and accidents. The surveys were conducted through Riderscan - European scanning tour for motorcycle … [Read more...]
