United Kingdom - Cycling UK, a charity originally founded in 1878 as the Bicycle Touring Club and subsequently re-named the Cyclists' Touring Club, who represent cyclists issues and the promotion of cycling, wants people to be trained to open their doors with their far hands to avoid “car-dooring” riders. Cycling UK says that it has written to the transport minister Jesse Norman calling for all car occupants – not just drivers – to be reminded of the importance of looking before opening their door and to be taught “the Dutch Reach” method. They believe that this … [Read more...]

Sharpen Up With Bikesafe 2017

2nd August 2017 by Motorcycleminds Leave a Comment

United Kingdom - We have always been a supporter of the police run BikeSafe initiative since its current inception in 1997 in Yorkshire, in our various guises of involvement in motorcycling "issues".  Why would we be any different at Motorcycle Minds? Although BikeSafe is prevalent across the UK in different Police forces, BikeSafe has over the last few years, gathered those police forces and served up one massive festival of biking, which attracted 5000 people at the Rockingham race circuit in Corby. The heart of this year's event is to showcase the freedom and … [Read more...]

Europe - Italy - Blue Screen -The FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) Europe reports that its 23rd Europe Congress in Rome (Italy) hosted the 11th edition of their Road Safety Conference on the 29th June 2017. The conference took place a month ago so you may be wondering why are we reporting now as the moment has passed. To answer your curiosity, our little Sony laptop which has travelled round Europe - by plane - by boat - by train and by motorcycle, finally seemed to give up the ghost and threw up the blue screen of death. Of course we had backed up … [Read more...]

DROPPING THE PRICE?

In February 2024 we published an article about motorcycle theft, this was then republished in May this year entitled "Motorcycle Theft and Jolly Good Company"

In the last few months there has been a flurry of campaigns and articles by organisations involved in motorcycle lobbying.
Our article covered the issues like legislation and why part of the problem was the lack of adequate security in the manufacture of motorcycles/scooters/mopeds.

It also explained the reasons for theft, amongst which a major issue being theft for spare parts. We all know that motorcycle parts are very expensive, especially OEM parts (original manufacturer parts). Yet none of the lobbying organisations are prepared to challenge the industry to lower their prices as an attempt or even a gesture to discourage thieves from making money out of spare parts. When the lobbying organisations decide to work hand in hand with industry, it compromises their autonomy.

Then there are the "Clubs" like the Motorcycle Crime Reduction Group which are no more than talk shops where the boys (police, manufacturers, insurance companies, security companies, lobby groups etc) all sit round a table, talk a lot, have a cup of tea and biscuits then do nothing until the next meeting.

Ultimately insurers and motorcycle manufacturers don't care. If anything it gives the insurers the opportunity to increase your premiums and scare you into paying higher rates with the premise that your bike is at risk. investigativeresearch.org/documents/The%20Fear%20Industry.pdf

Also to consider that having your bike stolen can give the manufacturers the opportunity to sell more of them. The best you can get from the police is to be told that bike has been shipped to Eastern Europe rather than ending up in an auction house or in a scrap yard to be sold on in pieces.

So how about it MCIA/ACEM - how about you get the manufacturers to drop the prices of OEM spare parts? You never know, it might just make a difference.
