The Hump

24th March 2017 by Motorcycleminds 3 Comments

While wandering around the internet, Facebook to be exact, we came across a question on the Moto Riders Universe group page, (a group that has nearly 150,000 members), which was, “What is the hump for on a motorcycle jacket? I'm looking all over forums everywhere and some people are saying it's for aerodynamics or protection, while some say both and others say it barely effects either.” While most replies indicated that the hump was an aerodynamic “feature” first mainly used by riders that race in high speed competition, a few suggested that they were a safety feature, … [Read more...]

In December 2016 we reported on the "Vnuk Judgement" which concerned a 2014 decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union in relation to the judgement's possible effects on proposed changes to motor vehicle use and motor insurance within the European Union. "The Vnuk judgement concerned a case before the European Court of Justice about a man (Mr Vnuk) who was injured when he was knocked off a ladder by a trailer that was attached to a tractor, in a barn in Slovenia. The Motorcycle Helmet Law

15th February 2017 by Motorcycleminds 10 Comments

United Kingdom - It is that time of year when annual tribute rides take place organised by the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) to commemorate Fred Hill, who made it his mission not to recognise the 1973 motorcycle compulsory helmet law introduced in the UK by Parliament. Fred refused to wear a helmet which led to him being fined on numerous occasions, which he did not pay because of his convictions, thus ending up in prison. MAG UK backed Fred throughout his campaign and named him their "Freedom Fighter" as he campaigned against the helmet law and for the freedom of … [Read more...]

DROPPING THE PRICE?

In February 2024 we published an article about motorcycle theft, this was then republished in May this year entitled "Motorcycle Theft and Jolly Good Company"

In the last few months there has been a flurry of campaigns and articles by organisations involved in motorcycle lobbying.
Our article covered the issues like legislation and why part of the problem was the lack of adequate security in the manufacture of motorcycles/scooters/mopeds.

It also explained the reasons for theft, amongst which a major issue being theft for spare parts. We all know that motorcycle parts are very expensive, especially OEM parts (original manufacturer parts). Yet none of the lobbying organisations are prepared to challenge the industry to lower their prices as an attempt or even a gesture to discourage thieves from making money out of spare parts. When the lobbying organisations decide to work hand in hand with industry, it compromises their autonomy.

Then there are the "Clubs" like the Motorcycle Crime Reduction Group which are no more than talk shops where the boys (police, manufacturers, insurance companies, security companies, lobby groups etc) all sit round a table, talk a lot, have a cup of tea and biscuits then do nothing until the next meeting.

Ultimately insurers and motorcycle manufacturers don't care. If anything it gives the insurers the opportunity to increase your premiums and scare you into paying higher rates with the premise that your bike is at risk. investigativeresearch.org/documents/The%20Fear%20Industry.pdf

Also to consider that having your bike stolen can give the manufacturers the opportunity to sell more of them. The best you can get from the police is to be told that bike has been shipped to Eastern Europe rather than ending up in an auction house or in a scrap yard to be sold on in pieces.

So how about it MCIA/ACEM - how about you get the manufacturers to drop the prices of OEM spare parts? You never know, it might just make a difference.
