With the first year of the revitalised Motorcycle Minds over, we decided to have a look back though quotes from our past to celebrate that and whatever it is that 2017 might bring. Whether our articles and subsequent quotes matter or are even relevant, doesn’t matter, what matters is that we would like to think that in our own small way, we make a difference. With over nearly a decade on issues, starting from our incarnation as a regional set up called Right To Ride in Northern Ireland, to the European “mainland” as Motorcycle Minds, we have a shedload of comments and … [Read more...]
The Vnuk Judgment
The Vnuk court case came to our attention about 6 months ago and we commenced collecting information on the 2014 decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union in relation to the “Vnuk judgment” and its possible effects on proposed changes to motor vehicle use and motor insurance within the European Union. Recently the topic has been stirred up by movement within the UK Government through its public consultation, along with a joint statement by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), the Amateur Motor Cycle Association (AMCA) and the Auto-Cycle Union … [Read more...]
FIM Road Safety Awards – 2016
We have followed the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) Annual Road Safety Awards ever since we brought a version of an original road safety programme to Northern Ireland in our previous life as Right To Ride. That award was for the Ambulance Motorcycle Club of the UK CRASH Card www.crashcard.co.uk which is now available in several European countries and the United States. This received the FIM Road Safety Award in 2012. This year, marking the seventh year of the FIM Roa Safety award, was originally instituted as part of the FIM’s contribution to the … [Read more...]
Thank You European Union
Motorcycling is alive and well – thanks to the European Union! This article never made it onto Motorcycle Minds during the run up to the United Kingdom (England - Scotland - Wales - Northern Ireland) EU referendum. We think it is well worth another look and update it with some fresh information and thoughts after the "Brexit" results. EU Referendum and U.K. Motorcycling Trevor and I (Motorcycle Minds) have been watching the EU referendum debate over the last few weeks and as the date to vote draws near, we have decided to “come out” with our position regarding the … [Read more...]
Riders’ Rights or Riders’ Wrongs
Almost a year has passed since I wrote an article about riders' rights organisations on Linkedin. The article looks at the worth of established organisations are their decreasing membership and received quite alot of attention from around the world. In light of recent events in London with groups being set up - such as We Ride London and the UK Motorcycle Theft Protest, the article below seems as relevant today as it was a year ago. In other words - established organisations are in constant search of members so that they can exist - but aren't necessarily providing … [Read more...]
We Ride London
England - London - We Ride London - #WeRideLondon - has launched as the lead group to drive fair changes and improvements to the way transport policies from Transport for London and the Mayor’s office treat powered two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles and scooters). Motorcycles and scooters are being literally squeezed off London’s roads. New daily charges are about to be approved, which will affect thousands of riders. Almost £1billion is budgeted to support bicycle schemes in the capital, but despite motorcycles and scooters also helping to bust congestion and pollution, … [Read more...]
Ability or Disability? – That is the question…
United Kingdom - National Association of Bikers with a Disability (NABD) - Support of people with disabilities who wish to enjoy the freedom and independence of motorcycling It is about ten months now since I was first contacted by Andy from Exeter. He explained that he had suffered a cerebral abscess in 1984, at the age of fourteen, which had affected his vision, in particular a field of vision to the right of centre; he asked if I could help him to get a provisional licence to ride a motorcycle. My initial though wasn’t one of great optimism. The DVLA rules on … [Read more...]
